Our History

Ivan and Myrtle Allen
In 1948, Myrtle and Ivan Allen bought the Ballymaloe estate from the Simpson family. Having previously met The Simpsons at one of their famous parties, Ivan jumped at the chance to buy the estate and turn it into a mixed farm.
Over the next 16 years, they brought up their children whilst producing milk, butter, cream, eggs, home-raised pork and veal, along with a host of fruit and vegetables. During this time, Myrtle became highly knowledgeable about cooking and began writing a cookery column in the Irish Farmers Journal.
Our Origins
Quick History of Ballymaloe House
Richard FitzMaurice FitzGerald, the son of the Governor of the area built a castle. By the time of the Desmond rebellion, the occupant was John FitzEdmund FitzGerald.
John FitzEdmund of Ballymaloe Castle appointed himself Sheriff of Cork in 1570. However, after refusing to join O’Neill in 1599, his lands were devastated.
When John FitzEdmund’s son Edmund died in 1611, his widow housed the homeless friars at Ballymaloe. Her son John moved to Ballymaloe, where he died in 1640.
Her grandson Edmund lost the lands for taking the ‘rebel’ side. They passed to Broghill, son of the Earl of Cork, who survived a charge of treason in London, till 1672.
Colonel William Corker was in residence when the property passed to Hugh Lumley in 1700. He added some additional buildings to the northern side of the castle wall.
John Litchfield took over Ballymaloe in the early 1840’s. However, soon after, the potato crop failed. It was the start of the devastating famine in Ireland.
John Litchfield died aged 61, and his son William took over the farm. William’s sister, Jane, married an English man, Charles Simpson and lived on the farm with her sisters.
William died in 1921. With no men to tend to the estate, the Litchfield sisters turned to their Simpson relatives in England. James Simpson became heir to the property.
Ivan Allen married Myrtle Hill in 1943 and befriended Jim and Marion Simpson. In 1947, no longer able to look after the estate, the Simpsons sold it to their friends.
