On arrival to the welcoming Ballymaloe House reception you will be warmly greeted as usual and our reception staff will inform you of the additional post Covid19 health and safety measures we are taking in-house prior to showing you to your elegant country house bedroom.
We have created a weekly timetable of complimentary Ballymaloe experiences for you to book in advance. Please note that these experiences have limited availability and it is essential they are booked in advance.
Members of the Allen family, or a long term member of staff, will take you on a very personal tour of Ballymaloe House; you will learn a little about Ballymaloe’s impressive art and artefact collection, an insight into the Ballymaloe / Allen family story past and present, as well as history of the house and farm.
Ballymaloe House is still a family-run country guest house which can credit its success to the Allen family’s passion for growing and serving good fresh food in a unique homely ambience and style. Ivan and Myrtle Allen opened up their family home to the public in 1964 to subsidise their farming income but most notably because Myrtle loved to cook, and taught herself innovative, yet simple, ways to make the most of her husband’s seasonal farm produce.
Join one of our gardeners and enjoy a behind the scenes tour of our walled garden. Learn about the planning, planting, and harvesting of all our walled garden produce, ensuring head chef, Dervilla and team, always have a varied and bountiful supply of delicious seasonal produce to cook with.
The exact content of this walk and talk with understandably depend on the season and weather conditions. Our gardeners will be delighted to share their extensive knowledge on herbs and salad growing and any other specific guest requests. During mid-week summer evenings, with prior arrangement, it may be possible to book a pre-dinner farm to fork walk through the walled garden. An ideal and unique opportunity to visit the produce you will be about to choose from the evening’s menus.
Join art curator Richie Scott for a complimentary tour of the annual Ballymaloe Open Air Sculpture Exhibition every Thursday evening throughout summer at 6pm – advanced booking essential.
Richie first curated an exhibition of Irish sculpture in the grounds at Ballymaloe House in 2014. The interaction with nature is striking. Throughout the duration of the exhibition, you are invited to join Richie for guided information and light-hearted 1-hour walk and talk through the Ballymaloe Sculpture Trail.
Iona is our in-house floral designer. She predominantly uses flowers and foliage from the Ballymaloe walled gardens, woods, and farm, to decorate the house, bedroom, and dining rooms with seasonal displays.
Join Iona for a 45-minute tour of our gardens and learn how she plans the seasonal plantings with our gardeners, and beautifully brings the outside in, to create simple, effective, and natural floral designs throughout Ballymaloe House.
Join one of our Ballymaloe sommeliers and visit our cave wine cellar, deep in the foundations of Ballymaloe House and sample a little something from our Award-Winning wine list.
Ivan Allen began learning about, and collecting, wine in the 1960s. Little was known in Ireland at the time and Ivan and Joe, his farmhand turned sommelier started building an award-winning wine list to accompany Myrtle’s delicious menus. They invited wine producers from all over the world to visit Ballymaloe and many photographs and stories are still shared on the cellar walls.
