Unseen photographs, sketches, poetry, books and personal effects were amongst the lot auctioned at Bonhams, London. Thankfully, the archive will remain in Ireland. My Left Foot, from director Jim Sheridan, was a huge international hit in 1989. It launched the career of Daniel Day-Lewis for his performance as Brown, who broke through the barricades erected by his body and discovered a wondrous means of expression through his left foot - the only part of his body he could control.Brown was born into a family of 23 children of whom only 13 survived. He overcame astonishing odds to become an internationally recognised writer and painter.Day-Lewis won the Academy Award for Best Actor for a masterful performance that captures Brown's anger and artistry, his bellowing frustration and intense faith. Brenda Fricker, who plays Brown's indomitable mother, won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress and the film was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It also stars Fiona Shaw and Adrian Dunbar.
